Truck Driver Shortage Hits Record High

LITTLE ROCK, Ark – Just in time for the holidays!  A nationwide shortage of truck drivers.

As we speak, the demand is greater than the supply which means prices are going up and in some cases, deliveries are either sitting on docks… or arriving late.  According to the American Trucking Association, right now there’s a shortage of 51,000 truck drivers across the United States.  It’s also projecting that the driver gap will skyrocket even higher by 2021.

Truck drivers play a critical role in fueling the nation’s economy.  They deliver everyday household goods and products around the clock and across the nation.  According to the ATA, big rigs haul over 70% (10.77 billion tons) of all freight tonnage of consumer goods moved in the U.S.  And even though the economy is hitting on all cylinders, the trucking industry is facing a crisis that hasn’t been seen or felt in nearly 34 years.  Butch Rice is the President and CEO of Stallion Transportation Group in Beebe.  He says, “It’s in probably in the worst condition it has been since deregulation in 1984.”  What keeps him up at night along with other trucking company owners across the nation, is the lack of drivers.  “This year was a big mark for retirement and the reason why is because of the new hours of service rules, the new regulations that took place in March.”

What Rice is talking about is Electronic Logging Devices, or ELDs.  By December of next year, all carriers and drivers must have them up and running.  The device looks like a small computer and replaces the paper logs drivers are used to.  The device permanently tracks a driver’s time, rest periods and location among other things.  Safety features that Rice says he fully supports.  “You’re saying it’s a positive thing, but some drivers out there might disagree with you,” I say to him.  Rice nods his head immediately and tells me, “They took a 33% pay cut.”  I ask him, “Because of the ELDs?”  His response?  “Yes, because of the ELDs.”

The federal mandate also limits the amount of time a driver can be behind the wheel to 11 hours during a 14-hour day.  Once they hit that mark, they are required to take 10 hours off.  A safety feature some drivers don’t like.  “A typical driver here was running 33-hundred miles a week.  Today, it’s about 28-hundred a week and you’re paid by the mile,” says Rice.  As result, Rice believes the mandate and ELD’s forced many longtime drivers to hang up the keys for good or find other jobs.

Shannon Newton is the President of the Arkansas Trucking Association.  She agrees with Rice and calls the current climate “alarming.”  She says, “The driver shortage, electronic logs and good economy are all contributing to product being delivered late or not meeting some deadlines… or costing more in order to get it there in the same timeline that a customer expected a year ago.”  As a result, the industry predicts it will need to hire nearly 900,000 new drivers nationwide over the coming decade.  Recruiting them; however, may be the biggest challenge.  “For somebody to tell them that you’re going to be away from family for 7 days or 14 days or whatever the company policy is… it’s a lot harder to attract people into that market,” says Rice.

So trucking companies across the state and the nation are now coming up with new and unique ways to lure drivers new and old back into the rig.  “We as owners have always looked at our trucks as obviously a cost.  But now we look at them as even more or a recruiting tool,” says Rice.  In fact, all of his 85 rigs are brand new.  Each one costs roughly $160,000 and is rotated out every 20 months.  Each one is fully automatic and equipped with state of the art amenities.  “In our trucks, there are Bose sound systems, TV’s, refrigerators and microwaves.  All of these are standard now,” says Rice.  Features that veteran driver Jerry Dawson believes will attract drivers of all ages.  “If you love to drive, this is the job for you and when you get up to go to work in the morning… you get up, take two steps and you’re at your job.”  Trucking companies are also changing routes so drivers can spend more time at home with family.  “Now trucking companies are doing what we call a relay.  So they have two drivers who leave. let’s say, Little Rock and San Diego… and they meet in the middle and then return home.  That makes it more desirable.  You get home more.  Your routes are more predictable. So that’s more attractive now to the demographic that we’re hiring,” says Newton.  One other attractive feature is the pay.  More and more trucking companies are upping the ante.  “Our driver pay last year… our average driver made $58,000.  This year, our average driver will make $72,000,” says Rice.  Other trucking companies are offering bonuses of $1,500 or higher.  And companies like Stallion are also picking up a big portion of driver’s health insurance premiums.  “We used to pay 50% of their health care.  Now we’re paying 68% of their health care and now we’re looking at going 100%,” says Rice.

If the current climate continues and demand remains strong, retail and grocery prices will continue to go up.  That’s because freight costs have increased by as much as 10% and could go even higher.  As a result, retailers are raising shelf prices.  And Most trucking companies can afford these extra costs right now, because the demand is so high.  But what happens down the road, or around the bend… remains to be seen.  One possibility involves legislation that is currently being considered in the House and Senate.  It would allow 18-year-olds who have a commercial driver’s license to drive semi’s out of state… something the current law does not allow.  One other possible solution is already in the works, thanks to Elon Musk.  His team is already working on an electric semi with semi-autonomous capabilities.  It offers a number of safety features including automatic braking, lane tracking, nuclear explosion-proof glass and has a range of 500 miles.  But is the trucking industry and the public ready for a 33-thousand pound missile to cruise down the freeway or highway on auto-pilot?  Click on the link below and cast your vote:

Werner Enterprises Posts Double-Digit Gains in Revenue, Profits in 3Q

Werner Enterprises posted double-digit gains in revenue and profits in the third quarter as demand for the company’s one-way truckload freight hauling services was “stronger than normal” and shippers paid higher rates.

In a statement released Oct. 18, Werner said it earned $47.5 million, or 66 cents a share, in the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with $22.5 million, or 31 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue grew 19%, to $629.7 million from $528.6 million.

Werner’s results largely are in line with expectations for other publicly traded trucking companies.

Average revenue per tractor per week, excluding fuel surcharges, increased 10.3% to $4,074 in the third quarter of 2018 from $3,696 in 2017, reflecting higher contract rates. The company also experienced an increase in surge volume and dedicated contract carriage services.

“Changing shipper freight-replenishment patterns and faster on-time service requirements are occurring as some customers shift freight from longer-haul one-way fleets to shorter length-of-haul dedicated fleets,” Werner stated. “As a result, more trucks are needed to service an increasing amount of shorter-haul freight.”

Werner was able to expand its fleet, despite difficulties in finding enough drivers.

The company ended the third quarter with 7,750 trucks in its truckload segment, an increase of 375 from the same period a year ago, and 4,400 trucks in its dedicated business, an increase of 445 trucks.

In contrast, Werner said that the number of power units provided by independent owner-operators has declined and was 615 at the end of the third quarter in 2018 versus 675 a year ago.

The company said it is taking steps to get more drivers by increasing pay, buying new equipment and working with customers to improve or eliminate unproductive freight.

“These efforts continue to have positive effects on our driver turnover,” Werner stated in its earnings release, noting that driver turnover in the third quarter was the lowest percentage in the past 20 years.

Werner recorded a $4.6 million gain on assets in the third quarter as the company sold 40% more trucks and trailers than a year ago and benefited from rising prices for used equipment.

Looking at a breakdown of results, Werner reported higher profits and revenue for its truckload and logistics business units.

Operating profits for truckload transportation services were $58.9 million in the third quarter of 2018 versus $34 million a year ago. Revenue, excluding fuel surcharge, was $484.8 million in 2018 versus $407.6 million in 2017.

Werner Global Logistics had operating profits of $4.8 million on revenue of $58.9 million in 2018 compared with operating profits of $1.3 million on revenue of $34 million a year ago.

Werner, based in Omaha, Neb., ranks No. 15 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America. Werner Global Logistics ranks No. 21 on the Transport Topics Top 50 list of largest logistics companies in North America.

America’s largest trucking company is combating a driver shortage by raising wages — and so far, it’s working out.

J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. said late Monday its contract-services unit has raised wages by around 10 percent over the last 12 to 18 months to recruit new drivers. That compares with a 2.8 percent increase in average hourly earnings for all U.S. private-sector workers in the 12 months through September, and 4.3 percent over the past 18 months, according to Labor Department figures.

“We have been recruiting drivers very well in this difficult market because of the pay that we’ve been able to price into our deals for our drivers,” Nicholas Hobbs, president of the contract-services business, said Monday on a conference call following the Lowell, Arkansas-based company’s third-quarter earnings release.

The comments add to anecdotal signs that wages and perks in the industry are picking up as customers seek shipping services to meet solid demand amid the lowest unemployment since 1960s.

Even so, the Labor Department’s official data have yet to show such a strong pickup in pay: Average hourly earnings for long-distance general freight trucking employees were up just 1.9 percent in September from a year earlier.

US truck driver solo offer of $80k underscores persistent scarcity

Transport America has joined the legion of trucking companies raising driver pay — to $80,000-a-year for a solo driver and $170,000 for a team — as the US driver shortage coupled with peak season demand for cargo transportation challenges sector.

The company’s solo salary — outlined in a release announcing the hike, offers remuneration for a solo driver that is above the $75,000 a year that trucking executives have admitted would need to be breached to end the “shortage.” The salary hike, which took effect Sunday, is the company’s second this year.

It puts the Transport America pay level above the average trucker driver’s salary of $50,000 to $60,000. A truck driver earning $80,000 a year would be making slightly less than the $84,000 median wages of a statistician or a mathematician, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The BLS, mean or average wave for a tractor-trailer driver last year was $44,500, a 2.1 percent increase from 2016 and a 10.2 percent increase from 2012. That figure, however, includes wages for more than for-hire freight truck drivers.

The size of the Transport America hike, and the fact that it is the company’s second this year, reflect the trucking industry’s frenzied efforts to hire and keep truck drivers with hikes, benefit increases, bonuses and other inducements.

The strong economy, the December introduction of the electronic logging device(ELD) mandate, and the aging of the driver population and lack of interest among younger workers in the occupation, have combined to create a dearth of drivers just as they are needed most. That has made drivers a hot commodity.

Transport America — pay-for-performance system

Transport America, a subsidiary of TFI International Inc., said the company’s “pay-for-performance structure recognizes drivers for their hard work and overall performance, making it possible for them to more rapidly achieve the top pay rates and additional performance bonuses.”

The Eagan, Minnesota-based company, with 2016 revenue of $351 million, was ranked 36th in the JOC Top 50 Truckload Carriers in 2017. The company provides truckload transportation and logistics services throughout the US, Mexico, and Canada.

“We continue to have the utmost respect for our drivers and their dedication to keeping America moving, and we are excited to again be increasing their pay,” said Paul Simmons, Transport America President.

Trucking companies aren’t just competing against other trucking companies for new employees, however, they are competing against construction firms, the oil and gas drilling industries, as well as warehouses, and fulfillment centers, that are hunting for workers, and often attract the younger demographic.

Truck driver pay and benefits increased for the fifth straight year in 2017, according to the American Transportation Research Institute.

The JOC For-Hire Trucking Employment Index hit a reading of 102.5 in August, indicating US trucking employment is about 2.5 percent above its pre-recession peak level in the fourth quarter of 2006 and early 2007. Despite that overall gain, the American Trucking Associations estimates for-hire carriers face a shortage of 50,000 truck drivers in 2018.

When sales slump due to a slow economy, a business owner’s first inclination is often to cut the marketing budget. After all, one has fixed costs and cash flow can be irregular. But marketing should be the last activity you eliminate or you risk an even faster downward spiral. Advertising your business and attracting new customers should be an ongoing process, and there are many things you can do that cost absolutely nothing. In these times money might be tight but the need for revenue is continuous, here are just a few suggestions.

Become the expert

Submit articles related to your business to the local paper, trade journals and professional organization’s newsletters. Choose a topic that reflects your expertise on the subject and makes sure your business is mentioned. You might also find a website that may be interested in letting you host a guest column. Whenever you get published, make copies and send them to all your current and potential customers.

Be a great public speaker

Professional meeting planners are always looking for presenters and workshop leaders for conferences. Research contact names in the Directory of Meeting Planners. When you do get the opportunity to make a presentation, be sure to collect business cards for a drawing to win a book or other prize related to your business.

Teach an adult education course – Trucking Schools

This is an excellent way for customers to see you as an expert and help advertise your business. This works especially well for service-oriented businesses such as financial planning, healthcare or tax preparation. Simply call your local school district or community college where adult education courses are offered. Better yet, offer free or inexpensive seminars at libraries, restaurant event rooms or a friend’s office.

Reward referrals $$$

One of the best ways to get new customers is to enlist the help of your current ones. Offer a reward of free merchandise or services for any lead that turns into a new business. If you publish a catalog, include a card where customers can provide the name and address of someone else who might want to receive one. When you get a new customer from a referral, be sure to send the source a personalized thank you note along with their reward.

It’s crucial to keep in touch with your current customers as well as potential ones, and what could be easier than sending out a regular newsletter? After you obtain permission from the recipients, you can describe new products, offer coupons and provide links to articles online your customers might be interested in reading. Keep it simple with pure text or include photos and other graphics.

Make the most of (free) public relations

Another way to get your name out there is to contribute to online discussion groups (without making it obvious you’re advertising). Find the forums that relate to your business by typing in keywords at the top online group websites. I recommend Google, Yahoo and MSN groups. Be very careful when using forums to advertise. Many discourage users from bombarding discussions with their own links or promoting their business. Find a forum built for this type of promotion, otherwise, you could lose credibility.

If you sell any type of product used by families, contact your local PTA and offer a special shopping night where a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the school.
